Post-Holiday Skin Recovery Guide

seo-img-article

The holidays did quite a number on my skin: I was in Singapore over the break, with the major event being my  younger sister’s wedding. We didn’t hire a wedding organizer for the event, which meant that all the bridesmaids and groomsmen were responsible for heavy grunt work like stacking chairs and setting up fairy lights at the tent, and even taking care of small things like folding napkins and tying up the little bows onto the souvenir boxes.

It was a pretty international event too, with our decorator friend coming in from Jakarta, a florist friend from KL, and friends from middle school all the way up to university flying in from Japan and the USA. So despite all the sweating, banged-up knees, and stitches (!!!), we were happy because we had come together to make a beautiful wedding.

So I’m physically and mentally exhausted after weeks of juggling the wedding organizer and maid of honor duties, and the the stress is showing in my skin. I tried my best to maintain my regular skincare routine during the break, but of course I slipped up every now and then, and these slip-ups add up. So I’m on the express lane to skin recovery, and here are a few things I’m doing to help expedite the process:

1. Catch up on ZZZs

My sleeping patters were messed up by prepping well into the AM and waking up just a few hours later to do hours of manual labor. When you shortchange yourself on sleep, you are basically doing your body and skin a huge disservice: for one, sleep deprivation releases a stress hormone called cortisol, which can wreak havoc on collagen. And don’t even get me started on how lack of sleep accelerates skin aging.

2. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

I did a lot of sweating in the run-up, during, and post-mortem of the wedding. I’m sure there were times when I accidentally wiped sweat off my face with the back of my hand or the sleeve of my shirt — so there’s a lot of unseen grime embedded in my pores (so attractive). I evict the unwanted scuzz by exfoliating with a good scrub every other day. This is probably a little excessive, but I plan on only doing this for a a week before returning to my regularly-scheduled weekly exfoliation.

3. Go easy on the makeup

I also think it’s important to simplify my makeup routine for a week to let my skin “recover.” Something I like using in lieu of my usual moisturizer + SPF + CC cream + compact foundation + loose powder is the Lancome City Miracle CC Cream, which combines all these things in one slim tube. Such a time-saver.
