When I was a kid, my mother used to yell at me for not doing the things she asked me to do: I’d get a good yelling at if I delayed taking care of any chores and homework. I hated it at the time, but obviously my mother was shelling out some tough love to prepare me for the future.
This is the kind of thing I dish out to my hair on the daily: I express tough love to my rebellious hair every time I submit it to the stress of heat styling tools. And guess what? Now there are a brand new range of hair products that want to give my hair the same type of tough love to affectionately work them into submission.
The new products in the Discipline range by Kérastase are designed for unruly hair in mind — so it doesn’t matter if you have thick or thin hair, because the point of Discipline products is to give hair of all textures and thickness a lightweight fluidity. The range of products worked really well together on my thick, dense, and wavy hair. Used individually, they’re just okay — but put them together and you get some really amazing results. Using them separately and using them altogether as part of the same routine is the difference between a single Power Ranger and a Megazord.
The products in this range include two that’s only for use by professionals in salons, and four that you can purchase at Kérastase salons. These products are:
1. Bain Fluidealiste – shampoo that serves all hair types, designed to give hair weightlessness, softness, and smoothness. It’s recommended that you don’t use this as a daily shampoo, but rather use it every other day to prevent loss of volume.
2. Fondant Fluidealiste – conditioner that’s also suitable for all hair types, works by locking in the shampoo’s benefits without weighing down the follicle.
3. Maskeratine – a nourishing and lightweight hair mask. To use, apply to damp hair that’s been shampooed, let it be for 20 minutes, and rinse. This mask is so effective, you can feel the benefits for days following the application.
4. Fluidissime – a leave-in spray that protects hair during the heat styling process. I really like this product, it’s definitely a contender to the products that I currently use on my hair.
So the secret to the Discipline products is a proprietary Morpho-keratine Complex formula, which I guess is Patentspeak for a new formulation of keratin. Keratin has been previously used as an ingredient in salon-grade hair straightening processes (like Brazilian blowouts, for instance), but the keratin in these products aren’t designed to straighten hair; they are actually formulated to reduce frizziness. It will not straighten curly or wavy hair, but it will add shine and that ever-scarce fluidity.
The Discipline range will be available at Kérastase salons by the end of October. This is a great set of products for anyone who loves the color and thickness of their hair, but wishes it was more manageable and smooth. If this isn’t you, then you probably a) already have fantastic hair (hello, I hate you), or b) are Kate Middleton (hello, I love you).
