Have you caught up with the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards yet? Beyonce shone (of course), Miley left her twerking shoes at home (phew), and Nicki Minaj kept her head cool despite a potentially disastrous wardrobe malfunction (yikes). As usual, the red carpet was a veritable style yay or nay smorgasbord and I, for one, am glad to get salty about it.

When I first saw the photographs of Nicki walk the red carpet in this sparkly Saint Laurent safari-inspired mini dress, the first words that came to my mind were the lyrics to this song. The hem of that dress just barely skims the butt, sure, but she balances it out with long sleeves. Her low-key hair and makeup are also on point — she saves the flamboyance and wigs for her onstage performance of Anaconda (which really should be preserved by by the United States’ National Film Preservation Board for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic relevance to 21st century pop and hip hop).
