Here's What Happened When I Stopped Washing My Face

Before you completely freak out, let me tell you right now that this article nowhere as disgusting as the title makes it out to be. But it is true, though: about two weeks ago, I stopped washing my face with facial soap. This completely goes against all our previous campaigns to encourage you to double cleanse, but I stopped washing my face two weeks ago and here’s what happened:

Nothing.

So the whole thing started by accident: I came home late one night and was so tired that I did not have the energy to take off my makeup. But because I write for a beauty website and know better than to hit the sack with a face full of makeup, I dug deep and made the walk to the bathroom. I only went as far as getting rid of my foundation, eye makeup, and lipstick with Bioderma Sensibio H2O solution, before I thought “THAT’S IT I’M TIRED WE’RE DONE LET’S GO.” I slapped on some of my beloved Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate and proceeded to fall back asleep on the couch.

IMG_3047I woke up the next morning, my mind racked with guilt for skipping out on my double cleansing. But when I inspected my face in the mirror, I was shocked to find that my skin didn’t look terrible…in fact, it looked kind of okay. I did the same single Bioderma swipe-cleanse that night and woke up to the results that were pretty good. So I did it again the following night, and the night after that, and the night after that…

But while I’ve been skipping the facial soap, here’s what I haven’t stopped doing:

  • using toner, serum, moisturizer, SPF, makeup every day
  • having a facial once every two weeks
  • using a mud mask once a week
  • exfoliating with a scrub twice a week
