If previously I’ve shared with you the story about the wonderful craftsmanship behind Hermès Carré, now let me share you a wonderful story from Hermès Master Printer and Textile communicator, Mr Kamel Hamadou.

Once upon a time, there was this special butterfly that laid 300 eggs that turned into 300 silk worms. These silk worms eat Mulberry leaves night and day so they can produce a single thread to make their cocoon. Each thread is 1,500 meters long. When Hermès weaves all 300 cocoons, it produces 450,000 meters of fine silk thread which is then weaved into fine silk, enough to create a 90 X 90 cm Hermès Carré.

As Mr Kamel poetically says, ‘One butterfly equals one scarf’. What a beautiful story.

Currently Hermès imports the cocoons from Brazil, where they have absolute control over the farm, producing the highest quality silk threads. The threads are then shipped to Lyon-France, the center of all Hermès textile products, for weaving and printing. Every process goes through a very strict quality control before the product is shipped to the boutiques. All of Hermès silk products are produced in Lyon, such as the silk ties and pret a portêr items. All of these items are printed the same way as the scarves.

Hermés has their own colourist who produces new colours every year for the design team to play around before unveiling their new collections. Each Carré design is then produced with 10 different colour combinations. Twice a year, Hermès will invite the store managers from all over the world to Paris, for them to choose and order which colour combination and design they would like to order for their store. Paris Fabourge Saint-Honore shop has the complete collection compared to the other stores in the world. Which design would you choose if you were a Hermès Store Manager?
