The Toners Review; 9 of Them!

I have more than one of everything, even before I started working with Fashionese Daily. I do that because my (and your) skin condition changes periodically. Especially for women, hormonal changes can affect the condition of the skin as well. But the winner of my skincare-hoarding habit is having too many toners. Boy, do I have A LOT of toners on my beauty shelf! I have at least three at any given time.

Why would you want to have more than one toners? Toners usually act as daily exfoliator or an agent to lift up any impurities on our skin. It also brings back the hydration to the skin after cleansing and prepares it for your moisturizer, so it will be better absorbed. It’s important, because it’s in the preparation stage.

At the moment, I have five bottles, and one that is already empty :)

Left to right: SK-II Cellumination Mask-in-Lotion, Clinique Clarifying Lotion No 2, Biotherm Aquasource Skin Perfection Hydra-Perfection Lotion, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner, Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Alcohol-Free Toner, Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion

I’ll tell you why I love every single one of them and how I used them. If you haven’t already known, my skin is sensitive, and dry – sometimes leans to very dry. Monthly cycle usually causes pimples to appear but not at a breakout.

1. Kiehl’s Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion Rp 250,000 (250ml) or Rp 350,000 (500ml)

I got the small size bottle, 125ml, which I only used for three days in a month. Not my everyday toner, I just use this on the area where acne sprouts during monthly period cycle. I don’t use this toner all-over my face, since it has rather strong astringent affect and it makes my skin really dry. But trust this toner to make your acne dries out completely in just couple of days.

It was originally formulated in 1964 as a multi purpose toner for oily and acne prone skin. People with oily skin tend to use this product all-over the face to control oil, but for me with drier type,  the toner does feel like it deprives my face of its oil. I heard that it’s so popular among male customers because it can be used as an after shave. Rumour has it, Andy Warhol was among the people who love this product.

Other than the extremely drying feeling, I also  don’t like how it leave white flaky stuff on my face, sort of feel like daki :)

2. Clinique Clarifying Lotion

This lotion feels like a safety net for me. Clinique 3-steps is the first skincare regime that I use, therefore I know that it would never fail me. Though my heart is not with this line anymore, but I retain at least a Clarifying Lotion at my disposal at all times.

It gently exfoliates daily, lifting all impurities in your skin and thus revealing a brighter skin. I love the after-effect where your face looks visibly more luminous. But I don’t favour the tightening feeling of this toner. I suspect it comes from the alcohol content. The reformulated Clinique Clarifying Lotion already contains Hyaluronic Acid, so it doesn’t feel as drying as the former one.

3. Biotherm Aquasource Skin Perfection Hydra-Perfecting Lotion

It’s the go-to toner for all skin type and condition. If you’re just looking for toner, here it is! It feels fresh, cooling and lift up all impurities. Though it contains alcohol, surprisingly it doesn’t leave any trace of alcohol scent and tingling sensation. It also doesn’t feel drying.

4. Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Alcohol-Free Toner Rp 180,000 (250ml)

I’ve been in love with its cooling sensation since the first time I get this Kiehl’s Cucumber Toner. Not as cooling as Menard Tsukika Lotion when patted, but just equally sublime. The thing is, most of the time I don’t have the energy to do all the patting motion, so I now opt for this one instead. Because of its fresh sensation, this is my toner of choice for the morning.

It’s gentle, since it’s alcohol-free, and it doesn’t make your face feels tightened or drying at all. It also soothes your skin from the first time it touches your skin. I see that it able to remove debris and dead skin cells on my face as well as clearing up the clogged pores in my nose. Usually the pores on my nose are quite visible, but when I used this toner, it appears smoother.

Just the perfect toner for dry and extra sensitive skin. Funny thing is, I heard that you can use this as a mask, by drenching a tissue mask with this toner and apply it to your face, and resulting in good oil control, as I previously mentioned here.

5. Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner Rp 250,000 (125ml) or Rp 350,000 (250ml)

Contains carefully handpicked calendula petals that are inserted – by hand – into the bottle. Therefore, the price is quite steep compared to other toners sold by Kiehl’s. I currently don’t own one – I used to – , but I think having this is quite handy, especially when you’re experiencing redness or sensitive skin. It feels like a breeze in your irritated skin, calming it and preparing it for the next phase of your skincare.

I’m thinking of getting 125ml bottle to keep in handy, in case any redness or irritation occurs, which is likely to happen every once in a while, given my very-dry skin. It also help to soothe my skin when it’s cracking and flaky. After using this toner, my skin feels smoother, therefore I can use my foundation with ease, despite the cracking.

The most enjoyable part from this toner for me is the thick tea-like scent that is calming, perfect to end my night.

6. Menard Tsukika Lotion Rp 330,000 (200ml)

Hands down to my favourite toner! I’m a sucker for Japanese Skincare. It’s wise to say, that Menard Tsukika Lotion would be the perfect match to my Japanese brands-dominated skincare regimen. What I love about Japanese-brand toner is that it feels so hydrating, even before you put on your moisturizer. And in Japanese brand language, ‘lotion’ means to toner, in case you’re wondering :)

This lotion need to be applied in patting motion, much like how you apply Beauness in this video. The thing is, sometimes I don’t have enough patience to do it. But the result from this, is a really cooled skin (even when you touch it), and radiant look, because the skin is well hydrated and plumper. I also love using this lotion as a mask by pouring the liquid to a tissue mask. Use it around 10 – 20 minutes and find your skin to be totally rejuvenated, softer and brighter.

7. SK-II Cellumination Mask-in-Lotion Rp 715,000 (100ml)

Close contender to the previous product. I love the simplicity of this product. I use it by patting the product straight from my palms to my face. I used generous amount, or else I wouldn’t feel that cooling sensation. I’ve written a thorough review about SK-II Cellumination Mask-in-Lotion, but in short, I like this product because of the luminosity it brings to my skin. It’s also, surprisingly very hydrating. My only complain is the price! It’s almost twice the price and half the product of any other toner that I’ve used.

If you’re not experiencing any adverse reaction toward the Pitera contained in this product, you definitely need to try this one. Mine has just finished recently, hence explain the empty bottle on the picture :)

8. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner Rp 235,000 (250ml)

Yes, I know, another Kiehl’s toner *yawn*. But how could I resist their toners? They create toner products that deliver good result at reasonable price. Got this very recently because I remember how the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial line works well on my skin and I thought this too would be. I’m intrigued by its milky form and the promise of hydrating your skin because the emollients Squalane in it. Yes, it does feel super hydrating! pH balanced for optimal comfort for your skin and it also feels very mild. Have I told you that this is also alcohol-free?

Definitely worth to try if you feel your skin is dehydrated. Remember, dehydration is not relevant to whether your skin is dry or oily. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner is suitable for all skin types.

9. Pond’s White Beauty Lightening Toner

My go-to toner when my skin is acting good, and also when I need to replenish my skincare at the end of the month with limited budget :D

It’s seriously a value-for-money product, especially when you’re considering a mix between splurge and steal for your skincare routine. This toner refreshes my skin, balances the hydration level of it after I cleanse it and makes the application of my other skincare products easier. I don’t see any lightening effect though.

Do you think any of the toners above might be suitable for your skin? Or perhaps you love one of these toners as much as I do? Do share, ladies.
