Androgyny was taken to new heights in the modeling world last year when Elliott Sailors joined a very small club: she is one of a very few women who is signed onto the men’s division of a modeling agency. Her job was constantly threatened by newer crops of younger models, and in addition to the age issue, she was on the receiving end of constant criticism from industry people regarding her looks: people were saying her brows were too thick, her forehead too broad, her jaw too square to feature in a women’s glossy.

So when she lopped off her hair and started modelling suits instead of bikinis, the world started paying attention again.
