Tried & Tested: MAC Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage

IMG_4480What is it? This is a silicone-based primer for the face. On the website, it is described as “An ultra-fluid lotion formulated with special-effect silicones. Calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil, and evens out skin redness. Improves the laydown and application of foundation or powder.”

What does it do? Applied after moisturizer and before foundation, the primer will help lock in moisture, fill in pores and fine lines, extend the wear time of foundation, and keep the skin shine-free.

How does it feel? The product comes out of the bottle as an opaque white substance. It spreads smoothly over skin with a powdery, non-greasy finish. Once spread out evenly over skin, you can really see just how glittery the product is. But don’t worry, I’m not talking about a disco ball sort of glittery: it’s actually meant to reflect light, which gives skin a bright, glowing complexion. Any foundation that you apply on top of it will be less likely to slip and will last longer too; alternatively, you can wear it on its own after moisturizer for a “soft focus” look.

Is silicone safe for all skin types? Sensitivity to silicone is quite rare, and you will find silicone in a lot of skincare, makeup, and hair products. Because of its chemical makeup, silicone sits on top of skin and does not get absorbed into it. This essentially creates a barrier between skin and the outside world, which has its positives and negatives: on the plus side, it helps lock in moisture, which is why you’ll find silicone as an ingredient in plenty of serums and moisturizers. But on the downside, it gives dirt and bacteria nowhere to go during the duration of you wearing it. So always double cleanse!
