Backstage Chat: Natasha Mayinda of Namayinda

seo-img-article

We’re always on the lookout for young Indonesian talent on the fashion front, so we were really pleased to meet the pleasant Natasha Mayinda, the woman behind her year-old label, Namayinda. She implements Indonesian tenun into designs that are classic but also contemporary: she’ll work some ruffles into a qibao, or turn traditional cloth into an A-line dress. Her use of bright colors and simple but classic silhouettes actually remind me a lot of Sebastian Gunawan’s Votum.

Natasha returned to Indonesia after spending nearly two decades in North America, and after receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, she attended the New School to pursue the one thing she has always wanted to do: fashion. Since her return, she’s been busy working on tailored dresses for a loyal customer base who come to her for something special to wear at weddings, parties, and other special occasions. Part of her repertoire includes making dresses for little girls, so mothers and their young daughters can look like two peas in a pod.

We caught up with Natasha at her studio in West Jakarta for a chat, and she let us in on her everyday activities and the designers who inspire her own work.

She premiered her collection Indonesia Creative Week 2013, which was inspired by the colors and textures of Mount Bromo. Check out the pictures below for a glimpse into her work! For more info, take a gander at her Facebook page.
