Weekend Roundup: New in Town

Shopping

You’d be forgiven for thinking Wakai is a Japanese enterprise, but what a lot of people don’t realize on the get-go is how this is actually a locally-brewed business. Wakai was founded and operated by Metrox Group, the same umbrella company that brought us The Little Things She Needs. Wakai has gone from being known for their low priced everyday slip-on shoes, but have since moved on to become a lifestyle brand that includes clothes and home decor needs. Earlier this month, they opened their tenth store at Jakarta’s Gandaria City. It’s quite an adorable little space, really, designed to look like an old-timey London railway station. There, we also learned about the brand’s new range of wedge and ballerina shoes, as well as new fashion collaborations. Check out the store at Gandaria City to take in the whole experience firsthand.

For something a little more niche, head on to the second popup store presented by The Watch Co. The lifestyle collective continues on its quest to herd cool brands . Expect to find brands Australian  Sunday Somewhere, American jewelry maker Venesa Arizaga, and — of course — watches from ultra cool brands like Void Watches, Aark Collective, and Hyper Grand. The popup store is located at the 4th level Atrium of Plaza Indonesia and will be around until January 2014.

Dining

Starbucks is anticipating the joy of the upcoming holidays by bringing in their iconic red cups. They’ve brought back the beloved Peppermint Mocha and Toffee Nut Latte, but have also brought in a new addition to the family in the form of the Gingerbread Latte, which was brewed to basically be a dessert in a cup: freshly-baked gingerbread cookie swirled with our smooth espresso and velvety steamed milk; topped with whipped cream and nutmeg.

Now that’s fine and dandy and all, but what I want to know is this: when will we get to keep ourselves warm over a cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte again?!

Events

A new cycle of L’Oreal’s For Women in Science has commenced. Over a span of three days at University Indonesia’s Depok campus, participants and attendees were treated to an itinerary that consisted of book launchings, lectures, and talks about the importance of supporting women in the sciences. All the events culminated in an awards ceremony, which saw the handover of grants to four scientists with the aim of helping them expand their research. How nifty is that? Congratulations to the fellows, and we hope this event serves as a great jumping-off point into even greater endeavors!
