CrossFit Kemang Fosters Strength Through Community Empowerment

seo-img-article

The new CrossFit Equator Kemang opened its doors on 28 September 2013. With the new Kemang location, the box has transformed itself as not just a place for its members to work out, but also to build a close-knit community supporting each other to get stronger, faster, better, together. Dinda sat down for a fun chat with Head Coach Brian Pandji, who explained why CrossFit is not always about irons and bars…or burpees.

Congratulations on the grand opening of CrossFit Equator Kemang. I personally think the location in Kemang is perfect and the box looks amazing now that the trailer and equipment are in place. Has moving to a bigger location from Simprug always been in your agenda?

Thank you for your kind words. CrossFit originally started with the “Garage Gym Revolution” and we are a perfect example of that. We started with our garage because it was practical and low cost. But we understood that the community would grow faster and bigger at a commercial location. Moving out of Simprug has always been a dream for me as it allowed existing and new athletes to train in a better and more accommodating space.

Members of the box called themselves the Kemang Tribe. How important is community in CrossFit Equator and how this has helped the Tribe in achieving their fitness goals?

Community is the main engine in CrossFit Equator. The fun is in the community. We are called the Kemang Tribe because we consider each other as family that supports one another. As a tribe, we get behind a cause together, supporting each other while sharing our passion to the outside community. As a community member of CrossFit, we get stronger, faster, better, TOGETHER.

To honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Kemang Tribe has put together a joint team effort for a charity event called Barbells4Boobs. Every week from October 5, 2013 until the main event on November 9, 2013, the Tribe will perform a Crossfit girl benchmark workout and raise money through sponsorships and donations. All proceeds will go to Yayasan Kesehatan Payudara Jakarta (YKPJ). The current donation stands at IDR 40.2 million, showing the Tribe’s relentless effort to support breast cancer fighters, survivors, and honor those who have lost the battle at the hands of the disease.

What can participants expect in the main B4B event?

We consider the main event of B4B as a celebration for the Tribe and their sponsors for raising the IDR 40+ million in the past 5 weeks. Guests and participants to the main event of B4B will experience the true representation of CrossFit Equator and the best of its community, the Kemang Tribe. Expect to meet new friends, a good workout, fun games and an overall positive energy of the community.

This is a neverending topic, but many women (including myself at the beginning) are afraid of getting bulky through weightlifting. A depiction of beauty in our society has always been physical, with most  ideals of beauty being associated with runway models and magazine covers. How do you think CrossFit will help change the whole perception of beauty?

I think the fear of getting bulky through weightlifting is often a misunderstanding due to misinformation. There has been a lot of research that shows how weightlifting is what actually promotes weight loss. And we have seen the benefits of weightlifting for weight loss, overall health, and longevity through CrossFit training every day through our athletes. We know it works because we see transformation through our athletes. CrossFit will help change you to become better at everything, but beauty will always come from within.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word:

  1. Commitment: Hard work
  2. Passion: CrossFit
  3. Goals: Achieve
  4. Fitness: Functional
  5. Strength: Survival
