The Naked Truth, Part 1: Things You Need to Know About Waxing

seo-img-article

Raise your hand if you’ve ever wanted to try bikini or Brazilian waxing but don’t have the guts and still have questions about it! It recently occurred to me that this is one of the topics that we love to discuss in the forum but never got the chance to write about. So here’s the lowdown:

1. Why wax instead of shave?

When you shave, only hair on the surface of the skin is removed while the other half remains buried in the skin. Shaving promotes growth spurts in your hair, so when you shave body hair, you need to do it every other day (or every day for some people). Sometimes inconsistency in the direction or motion when shaving will also cause a “tear” in your pores and blacken it. Hair that grows right after a shaving procedure sometimes becomes even more coarse in texture. Not a pretty sight at all!

2. How does bikini waxing differ from Brazilian waxing?

Both are procedures to depilate pubic hair, but with a difference: bikini waxing is a process that will remove hair from the bikini line of your groin, meaning that you can wear a swimsuit without worrying about stray hairs “peeking” out. There are two common bikini waxing styles: the classic bikini wax removes hair from the upper mid-thigh to the inner thigh up to your bikini line, whereas the extended bikini wax goes a little bit further inside and takes off more hair while leaving some behind based on the customer’s preference. Some people will request for their pubic hair to be shaped into triangles or rectangles, but this would obviously require trimming to maintain.

Brazilian waxing, on the other hand, is designed to strip every single inch of pubic hair from the hoo-ha, all the way up to the buttcheeks.

3. Does it hurt?

Hell yeah it hurts! Anyone who tells you otherwise either has a very high pain threshold or just wants to look cool :p It’s a procedure where they strip off hair from a very sensitive area, so pain is expected. There are several things you can do to minimize the ouch factor, and you can start by reading Affi’s article here.

4. How long will results last?

Since waxing tears the problem right up from the roots, you can expect a hair-free 4 – 6 weeks until you need to go back for another service.

5. Is it safe?

While it’s a very common procedure done by many women nowadays, some adverse medical repercussions have been reported from the procedure. Bikini and Brazilian waxing are procedures done on a very sensitive are, so wherever you go for your session, you have to make sure that the technician knows what they’re doing. You don’t want to damage your skin, do you? So don’t shy away from asking questions to help you know for sure that you can trust that the place you’re about to be “butchered” in is legitimate. Some people will go to great lengths to make sure they have a trusted and professional technician because it’s a really sensitive matter 😀

Another thing that you will need to double check on is sanitation: without proper sanitation procedures, you are at risk of becoming ill or contracting an infection.

  1. No double dipping! If the place that you want to go doesn’t have a “no double dipping” policy, scratch it from your list.
  2. Make sure that a new applicator is used each time they dip into the wax product and apply it on your skin.
  3. Gloves are important, as it will make sure that the technician’s hands are clean and free from germs.
  4. Sometimes at the end of the procedure, the technician will either use tweezers or a threading method to pluck out remaining hair. Make sure tweezers are properly sanitized, and new threads are used with every new procedure.

Now that your basic questions about bikini and Brazilian waxing have been answered, the next questions would be: what method to use? Strip waxing or hard wax? What about sugar waxing? Fret not, a follow-up article is on its way.
