Dispatches from the Front Row: Day 2 at IPMI Trend Show 2014

As Dhany mentioned in yesterday’s post, today is my turn to show you my favorites from Day 2 of Bazaar Fashion Festival – IPMI Trend Show 2014.  We actually had fun being there for the entirety of the two days, witnessing the work of our beloved Indonesian designers go down the runway.  We nearly came to blows and ended up compromising on who would end up writing about which shows, because it turned out that we loved the same shows (yes, that plural is correct :p).  Check out the video below for highlights from Day 1!

Out of all the shows on Day 2, there were three that have remained stuck in my mind until this day: 1421 by Era Soekamto, Royal Embroidery by Barli Asmara, and Dusk & Dawn by Votum (Sebastian Gunawan and Cristina). The red thread that connects all these collections is their relationship to specific points in history, so let’s do this in chronological order, with Era Soekmato’s offering to begin.

Inspired by the treasures of Asia, China, and Java that indirectly lead to the birth of new culture in Europe, Era Soekamto portrayed the relationship that played out in the triangle that was by Javanese, Chinese, and Western trade in her 1421 collection.  These dresses perfectly capture the spirit of each cultural pillar: representing Java is batik and the Kebaya, mingling with the decorative motives from Western Europe’s Renaissance, and the trademark hues and motifs out of mainland China.

The show asserted itself from the very start through an amazing setting, complemented by the music to the choreography. The Batik, from the Iwan Tirta Private Collection, was breathtaking.  Dominated by cream, grey, turquoise, rustic gold, silver and a touch of red, the color palette created beautiful visual imagery by successfully integrating elements sourced from different continents as if it had come from one.
