Video: Hèrmes Carré - An Artwork in Disguise

I was completely blown away by how much time and effort for the making of each of these beautiful Hermès carré (scarf). It created an even more deep appreciation of the fact that what I am wearing is an artwork. Hermès, to this day, still prints their textile using a very old technique called silk-screen printing, which each layer of colour is printed one by one with the screen. These days Hermès uses polyester materials instead of silk. Hermés is passionate in preserving the traditional art techniques

The process from design, engraving to printing takes up to two years before the scarf is completed. The engraver spends around 700-2000 hours to analyse the design and separate each colour components, before translating these components into template on acetate paper, which will then be used to create the template on the screen. The famous Princess Wa’Ko Ni carré has 46 colours, the most at any Hermès carré and took 2000 hours for the engraver to create 46 different templates for each colour.
