The Luckiest

My friends must be yawning when they see what I write about here because they’ve been hearing nothing but this topic for the past few months.

But to those of you who don’t know, this post is dedicated to one of my most favorite musicians, Ben Folds and also about the luckiest day I just had recently.

I listen to many kinds of music but I’ve always been into singer/songwriter types like Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, and many more. And Ben Folds is one of them. I’ve been listening to his music since about 13 years ago, when I was still working as a radio DJ at Hard Rock FM and we often played songs from his old band, Ben Folds Five.

Since about 5-6 years ago, I started listening to his solo work intensely and started to really really love it. Like any good songs do, they got me through a lot of things. His songs were like soundtracks of some of the most important moments in my life. And though it may sound a bit dramatic, I drew some strength from his lyrics that happened to be quite fitting to how I felt or experienced at that time.

So I don’t have to tell you how excited I was when I first found out he was going to perform in Jakarta, right? For months I “prepped” myself for the concert by listening to nothing but Ben Folds at work and in my car, ignoring desperate pleas from my co-workers and my husband. And finally, on Thursday, 26th of May 2011, the day arrived!

Like I said before, it was my luckiest day. Not only I got to see him perform live, something I’ve always dreamed of since 13 years ago, but I got to meet him too! We chatted for a few minutes and he was a genuinely nice and very friendly guy. You can read the stories on my personal blog here and here (yes, there are two posts hahaha) I also got to interview him, thanks to Cleo Magazine, and it’s going to be out in their July issue if you’re interested in reading the piece 🙂

Anyway, naturally I wanted to look extra special that day. I don’t know why but I felt like dressing up a bit like Brandon Flowers from The Killers, you know with blazers and all. So I donned my boyfriend blazer and the wide-legged grey pants that have a masculine edge to it too. You probably can’t see it from this picture but I even put on a lot of “guyliner” to complete the look. Although on me, of course it’s only called an eyeliner.

Oh and this photo was taken after I had met Ben Folds and got his signature on my CD so that explains my super bright smile 😀

  • Pull & Bear boyfriend blazer
  • Body & Soul black tank top
  • Forever21 pants
  • Nine West heels
  • Tiffany bracelet and Origo bracelet
  • XSML ring

For the concert, which was truly the most awesome 2 hours of my life, I changed into something more comfortable

  • Batten Clothing Shoulder Cape
  • Ben Folds Lonely Avenue t-shirt (I got it at the merchandise booth and changed into it right away :D)
  • Next pleated pants
  • Toko dua amoi flat shoes (not shown)

And here is a photo of me with Mr. Folds himself (sorry, can’t help myself)

So who’s your favorite musician and how do you think you’d react if you ever meet them?
