Splurge or Steal: Blending Sponges

Blending sponges are great for a variety of makeup applications, such as for applying foundation, blush, and concealer, amongst others. There are some good drugstore varieties,  but I admit to buying the Beauty Blender ($19.95) after seeing a makeup artist’s desk  littered with it during some New York Fashion Week. That was more than two years ago, and I’ve been using it since.

The Beauty Blender is egg-shapped with a pointy tip at one end. It’s fairly soft, and what makes it different from other makeup sponges I’ve used is that it had a good ‘bounce’, making stippling a breeze. The pointy tip lets you reach the corners on your face easily, such as around the nose and in the inner eye corner. It is porous but the holes are fine, so it picks up the right amount of product and minimize waste. I’ve been using mine for more than two years about 1-2 times a week, and it’s still in good condition, even though some parts have chipped away.

In the last few months, however, I’ve been using my beauty Blender almost everyday as I’ve found a great two-way cake foundation that’s best applied wet with the Beauty Blender. I was thinking about buying another Beauty Blender to put in my travel pouch when I came across the Blender It Sponge Rp 70,000 in the Makeup Tools Shop.

The Blender It sponge comes in either pink or blue, and has a slightly indented middle for a more comfortable grip. Compared to the Beauty Blender, there are three slight differences. First, the Blender It is firmer, and therefore has less bounce.  Second, it picks up more product, so you need to be careful when using it to apply blush. And lastly, when applying liquid foundation, I needed more product compared to the Beauty Blender. Apart from those three things, I got the same result from either of these products, including a stellar result for the wet application of my favorite 2-way cake foundation (from Wardah, which I’ll review later).

The verdict? Splurge or steal, these are great items to add to your makeup arsenal.
