Even though I work with computer most of the time, I am pretty much clueless when it comes to how computer works or what’s inside them. If you ask me how many RAM my laptop has, you’ll probably get a blank stare from me.
Whenever I’m looking for a new computer, I usually will tell a techy friend about my computer needs, what I use it for and let them make the recommendation for me.
Luckily, I was invited to an event some time ago that really shed some light on how a computer works and dare I say it, I might have enough knowledge to determine what kind of processor I’m gonna get next! The event was held by Intel Indonesia and Dhyoti Basuki, Head of Public Relations, explained to us a “simplified” version of how PC works.
I’ll share some of you what I learned from the event in pointers style. Maybe it’s something you already know, but there’s no harm in reading it again to refresh your memory, right? 🙂
What to Remember
1.Processor or CPU: The brain of the computer. Buy the best Intel processor you can afford –it’s difficult and expensive to upgrade later on.
2.GHz: The speed at which the processor runs. A higher GHz number is an indication, but does not always mean better performance.
3.RAM: 2GB of RAM is ideal for everyday use. You can always add more memory simply and cheaply later on.
4.Hard Graphics: Integrated (built-in) graphics are ideal for everyday users. Only serious 3D gamers, designers and video editors need discrete graphics and even then they need to couple it with a high performing CPU.
5.Drive: 160GB is plenty of storage for everyday users. You can always upgrade the drive later, or add an external USB 2.0 hard drive if needed
So how do you choose the right Intel processor for your needs?
Your decision needs to be based on your needs and how you intend to use it. Do you use it to blog, edit photos, make videos, creating websites, gaming?
Intel has a few types of “personalities” that helps you to identify what kind of PC users are you and which Intel processor you will need.

Price is secondary to performance, By performance, it means the processor should put him at the top of the game, at the edge of creativity and at the forefront of multimedia convergence. Only the i7 Extreme can match his needs.

During the event, I got to see Nina Nikicio demonstrating how her ideas are morphed into actual designs. She was using Intel® Core i7 processor and I could see how seamless her working process is as she moved effortlessly from the video she was watching as inspiration, to the sketches in freehand, to the image in photoshop. The sketches she showed us was a part of Nikicio Femme newest collection, White Oleander, which Rizka has written about here.
Also present during the event was film director, Dennis Adhiswara who told us how happy he is now that he is able to do rendering for his short movie projects in minutes, a task that used to take him hours to complete. All thanks to the Intel® Core i7 processor he is now using.
