Jakarta at Dawn

The City of Jakarta had its 483rd birthday on 22 June 2010. To be honest, I’ve had a love-and-hate relationship with The Big Durian, but like it or not, the city is part of my life.

Here’s what I like most about Jakarta: the many and varied eateries. From the west to the east of Indonesia, local delicacies are well represented, if you know where to look. And half the fun is in the looking and in the ambiance of these eateries. Name an international cuisine, and chances are you’ll also find it in city.

Second, the shopping. From thrift shops to the world’s most luxurious goods, you’ll find it in Jakarta.

Of course, with the good, there are the bads, and the people who know me, have heard me moan about it every time I head to the city: T.R.A.F.F.I.C.

If there is only one thing, and one thing only, that Governor Fauzi Bowo could do which will garner him the affections of Jakartan, it is unraveling of the city’s traffic problem. The key is public transport, sir! Make the investment, and you’ll be remembered for all times. I mean, anyone remember the names of Jakartan governors except for Ali Sadikin? Exactly.

So, what are your likes and dislikes, and hopes and dreams, for The Big Durian? Please share in the comment box. And oh yes, the fantastic photos here are from Female Daily Forum member Tria a.k.a. Solaia. You’ll find her other (soon to be internationally-acclaimed) photos here.
